When Neil joined our company in 2015 as a Project Manager, he was stepping into a business full of possibilities. A decade later, he is now our Sales & Marketing Manager and part of the Senior Management Team, helping to steer JC Metalworks forward with strategy, innovation, and a people-first mindset. His 10-year journey is one of steady progression, adaptability, and a belief that teamwork is at the heart of success.

Early Experiences That Shaped His Path

Neil’s connection to metalwork started young. At just 16 years old, he enrolled in a six-month Youth Training Scheme in metal fabrication in Derby, gaining his first hands-on experience in the industry. Later, his career took him into the world of retail design with M-Square Ltd, where he worked across purchasing, quality control, installation, and assembly of retail displays.

“Working for a small company meant you had to wear many hats,” Neil explains. This breadth of experience gave him a deep understanding of the industry and the flexibility to take on challenges in many forms — qualities that would serve him well at JC Metalworks.

When the opportunity to join our company came along, Neil saw something that stood out: “I saw an ambitious and progressive company with a chance for me to grow into the role and make a difference.” That vision of progress and possibility inspired him to make the move.

Growing with JC Metalworks

Neil’s career here has been a journey of growth. Starting out as a Project Manager in 2015, he stepped into the role of Commercial Manager in 2017 before becoming Sales & Marketing Manager in 2024. Alongside these titles, Neil’s responsibilities expanded — focusing on data-driven decision-making, marketing strategy, and CRM systems that transformed the way the sales team worked.

“The changes have been huge,” Neil reflects. “Implementing CRM, rolling out MIE systems, taking on marketing responsibilities, and evolving to use data to grow and improve our business and processes. The type of work has shifted too — we now have less retail and a broader range of diverse projects.”

Highlights and Achievements

Looking back over the last 10 years, Neil can point to several defining highlights, including:

  • Helping the team secure major contracts with three of our longest-standing clients in the hospitality, logistics, and security sectors — wins that demonstrated JC Metalworks’ capabilities on a big stage.
  • Leading the CRM implementation, which he describes as one of the most rewarding projects.
  • Working on several large-scale, one-off projects in construction and retail, where the complexity and scale pushed the team to grow.
  • Completing his CMI Level 5 Management qualification, an achievement that gave him fresh insight into leadership and management.

Yet what Neil is most proud of isn’t a single project or system — it’s people. “Team development is what I’m proudest of,” he says. “Helping individuals grow, take on new challenges, and find their own paths. People are the key to everything — the best processes won’t work if people aren’t engaged.”

Overcoming Challenges

No 10-year career is without its challenges, and Neil’s has certainly faced its share. A couple of demanding retail projects come to mind — the kind that truly test problem-solving skills. External obstacles such as Covid-19 and fluctuations in sales have also required resilience and adaptability.

Neil has always focused on finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems. “You need to understand the difference between price and value,” he says, outlining one of the most important lessons he has learned. “It’s not always about being the cheapest; it’s about building trust and demonstrating the real value we provide to our clients.”

Memorable Moments Along the Way

Neil’s time with our company has been about more than just systems, strategies, and sales targets. He has also experienced many light-hearted and memorable moments. One particularly amusing incident was when he drove four hours to a client meeting, only to discover that the client thought it was supposed to be a Teams call instead.

A more recent memorable moment was when he finally understood the meaning behind a client’s personalised number plate: “It was an easy one — a bit embarrassing, really. We’ve been dealing with each other for seven years, and he was exasperated!”

He also recalls reviewing quotes for an important project years ago over the phone with Jason, our Managing Director, while Jason was on holiday in Jersey. “We were even sending photos of drawings via WhatsApp to keep everything moving forward,” Neil laughs.

These moments, both challenging and humorous, contribute to the wonderful memories that make his decade with us so special.

Looking to the Future

Neil’s focus for the years ahead is clear. Personally, he hopes to continue hitting sales targets and driving continuous improvement within his team. For JC Metalworks as a whole, he wants to see steady growth into new markets — something that will not only secure the company’s future but also create more opportunities for people within it.

Life Outside Work

Away from the office, Neil enjoys a full and balanced life. He’s been with his partner, Drue, for 22 years, and together they have a son, Henry, who is now 20. A lifelong football fan and Derby County season ticket holder, Neil also enjoys watching other sports, exploring the Peak District on long walks, and winding down with films and TV shows.

A Note of Thanks

Reflecting on the past decade, Neil expressed his gratitude:
“I want to thank everyone on my team and beyond who has supported me during my time at JC Metalworks. A special thanks to Jason, our Managing Director, for providing me with multiple opportunities for growth.”

Starting as a hands-on apprentice in Derby and rising to become a driving force in our company’s senior leadership, Neil’s journey exemplifies that progress is built on hard work, resilience, and belief in others. This 10-year milestone not only celebrates his individual achievements but also highlights the collective success of the team he has helped to shape.
