Background
A Locker System Fabricated Around Firefighters’ Needs
Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS), a UK provider of fire and rescue services, faced a challenge with its existing locker solutions. The lockers did not offer the look or flexibility the service wanted, and the existing systems were not as durable or reliable as required.
In November 2020, AF&RS chose JC Metalworks for its experience in designing and fabricating custom locker solutions and its reputation for reliable metal fabrication. The brief called for a solution that would reflect the service’s functional requirements as well as its preferences for appearance.
JC Metalworks worked closely with AF&RS to develop a customised locker design. The resulting approach brought together storage for firefighters’ kit, a place to change, practical locking and a modular configuration that could be adapted to the needs of individual fire stations.
Challenge
Give Firefighters a More Practical Locker Setup
AF&RS was dissatisfied with its existing locker systems. The replacement had to address several connected requirements rather than simply provide a new set of compartments.
01 / Flexibility and Fit
Locker dimensions needed to be based on AF&RS’s requirements, with a configuration flexible enough to reflect the needs of each fire station.
02 / Storage for Helmets, Boots and Clothing
The design needed to incorporate shelves for helmets and boots, an external hook for a firefighter’s jacket, and internal hooks and rails to meet the firefighters’ specific storage needs.
03 / Water Runoff From Stored Equipment
The shelves for helmets and boots needed to account for excess water runoff from stored equipment.
04 / Practical Use, Security and Durability
An attached bench made changing into and out of gear more practical. Replaceable locks and a master key supported convenient lock management, while the updated design offered a modern, professional appearance and addressed AF&RS’s concerns about the durability and reliability of its previous lockers.
Solution
A Customised Modular Locker Design
When Avon Fire & Rescue Service approached JC Metalworks, we were briefed about their requirements. We then worked closely with them to develop a customised locker design that met their functional and aesthetic preferences.
Size
The locker size was determined by Avon Fire & Rescue Service’s specific requirements.
Shelves
The shelves for helmets and boots were designed with mesh and plastic coating to protect from excess water runoff.
External features
A hook for the firefighter’s jacket was included on the outside, and a bench was attached to facilitate easy gear change.
Internal features
Specific requirements for hooks and rails were incorporated to meet the firefighters’ needs.
Locks
The lockers were equipped with locks that were easy to replace and included a master key for convenient management.
Enhanced aesthetics
The lockers provide a modern and professional look that complements the fire stations’ overall environment.
Improved functionality
The modular design allows for flexibility in configuration, ensuring that the lockers meet the specific needs of each fire station.
Increased durability
The lockers are constructed from high-quality materials, ensuring long-lasting performance and resistance to wear and tear.
RESULTS
A Modular Locker System Tailored to AF&RS
JC Metalworks successfully delivered a modular locker system that exceeded AF&RS’s expectations. The configuration combined sizing based on the service’s requirements with mesh shelves for helmets and boots, jacket storage, internal hooks and rails, an attached bench, and replaceable locks with a master key.
The project also involved installation support from Melita, whose team assisted with layout optimisation and installation. Together, the locker features and partner support helped deliver a practical storage solution that met firefighters’ needs and complemented the fire stations’ environment.
