SIP - Product Display Units

Value-engineered product display units developed from SIP Industrial Products’ initial brief, refined through prototyping and taken into production with a first batch of 25 units.

  • Display Structure: Fabricated metal stand
  • Fabrication Approach: Box sections replaced with folded sections
  • Prototype Refinement: One or two further tweaks before production
  • First Production Batch: 25 product display units produced

OUTCOME

25 Units in First Batch

Background

Turning an Early Idea into a Defined Display Unit

SIP Industrial Products Ltd made an initial enquiry before visiting JC Metalworks’ factory to see the facilities first-hand. During the visit, the client shared a verbal brief for flexible product display units that could be used on exhibition stands as well as at its head office.

The idea had not yet been formalised on paper. JC Metalworks interpreted the brief and created the initial drawings to visualise what SIP wanted, giving the project a clearer starting point before prototyping.

Challenge

Bring the Concept Within Budget Before Production

The main challenge was to value-engineer the proposed display units so the idea could come within budget. The brief was still at an early stage, so the concept also needed to be translated into drawings and taken through prototyping before moving into production.

Flexible Use Across Settings

The display units needed to work at both exhibition stands and SIP’s head office, so the design had to accommodate both intended uses while remaining practical to fabricate.

Budget Alignment

The construction approach needed to be reviewed for opportunities to reduce cost without losing sight of the display unit the client wanted.

From Verbal Brief to Drawings

SIP had a general idea but had not formalised it on paper. The brief needed to be interpreted into initial drawings that visualised the proposed units.

Prototype Refinement

The project needed to progress through a prototype stage, with the opportunity for further adjustments before the first production batch.

Solution

From Initial Brief to a Cost-Conscious Fabrication Approach

JC Metalworks reviewed SIP’s requirements and identified a practical way to reduce the cost of the proposed construction. The work moved from interpreting the brief into drawings, to changing the section approach and then refining the prototype before production.

01 · DESIGN INTERPRETATION

Turning the Verbal Brief into Initial Drawings

During the factory visit, JC Metalworks took a verbal brief for display units that could be used in two settings: exhibition stands and SIP’s head office. JC interpreted the idea and created the initial drawings to visualise what the client had described. The drawings helped bring the early-stage concept onto paper and established a basis for the next stage of the project.

02 · VALUE ENGINEERING

Replacing Costly Box Sections with Folded Sections

To bring the display units within budget, JC Metalworks replaced the more costly box sections with folded sections. This made better use of its machinery while providing a more cost-effective way to fabricate the units.

03 · PROTOTYPE AND PRODUCTION

Refining the Prototype Before the First Production Batch

With the revised construction approach in place, the project moved to prototype stage. SIP liked the prototype and, after one or two additional tweaks, JC Metalworks moved into production and produced the first batch of 25 product display units.

RESULTS

Prototype Refined. First Batch of 25 Produced.

The project moved from a verbal brief and initial drawings through value engineering and prototype refinement to a first production batch intended for exhibition stands and the client’s head office.

25 product display units produced in the first batch.

Cost-effective folded sections replaced costly box sections.

Prototype progressed to production after minor refinements.

Display units designed for exhibitions and SIP’s head office.

When we visited JC we had a general idea of what we wanted but we hadn’t formalised it onto paper. JC interpreted the design brief exactly and created the initial drawings visualising exactly what we wanted.
