Apprentice Open Day Review

31st August 2018   |   News

Keeping with the theme of all things Apprentice we wanted to share with you what our Apprentice Open Day looks like and to encourage anyone who might be interested in becoming a JC Apprentice to find our more and / or to contact us.

So a few weeks ago we ran our annual Apprentice Open Day with our partner Loughborough College.  After everyone had arrived onsite and signed in Michelle, our on-site Health & Safety Advisor ran our H&S Induction, before Praks led a factory tour.  Praks is an old hand at this now and he always gets everyone really engaged and encourages lots of questions!  This year’s group were particular talkative – which we took to be a good sign that they were really interested in what we do and in the Apprenticeship on offer.

After the tour Praks shared a short presentation on who we are, what we do and the benefits of working and learning with us, before Nicola (our HR Manager) and Therese from Loughborough College talked through the flow of the actual Apprenticeship itself (what they’ll be doing and at what stage etc etc etc).  We then ran a group exercise where we’re really spotting rising leaders, specific skills, personality and the like.

Once that’s done we brought in our current Apprentices and they meet with our potential Apprentices who are all encouraged to ask any questions they like – no holds barred.  How’s it going?  What’s it really like?  What do you like best about it?  What’s the worst bit?  This year there were a lot of questions!

We then serve a light lunch for both our existing and potential Apprentices where there’s an opportunity to ask any more questions before we say goodbye!  A few days later we have a further 10 – 15 minute interview / chat with the potential Apprentices who’ve really caught our eye.  What we really want to know is are they still interested in working with us; it’s so important that it’s a good fit both ways and that JC are right for them and they are right for JC.  After that chat we then make formal offers to those Apprentices we would really like to join us.

Currently we have just three Apprenticeship places on offer each year so if you are interested get in touch with us at hr@jcmetalworks.co.uk …… even though our next recruitment period will be July / August 2019 it’s always best to register your interest sooner rather than later!

In terms of what our current / previous Apprentices are up to now:

o   Jake Morris is now working in our Engineering Team having graduated this year.

o   Chris Walker is currently in our welding / fabrication department and has been with us for two years.

o   Tom Ross has also been with us for two years and is in our forming department.

o   Theo Pritchard has also just moved into our Engineering Team having previously been on our shop floor.  Theo has been with us for just a year.

o   Daniel Smeed recently moved into our Sales Team as an Estimator and has also been with us one year.

This year’s batch of three Apprentices are all extremely hands on and very much focussed on the shop floor – predominantly fabrication or forming which is great news.  We’ll introduce them to you soon after they’ve settled in a bit!  We’re sure you’ll join with us in welcoming them to the fabulous world of JC Metalworks!
